Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
